I think that one of the most absurd file formats that I tried to open recently has been Microsoft's "MDI" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Document_Imaging_Format for details).

It's a bastardization of TIFF, and as far as I can tell no Linux software seem to be able to transcode this to something more useful; I had to go through a Windows install with Office to open and convert them to TIFF for a customer two months ago.

I have some files laying around as Corel Draw vector graphics, file extension CDR.

Those files were created with some demo/tryout versions of CorelDraw 3 to 6, back in time when CorelDraw was the de facto standard for vector drawing on Windows. I never managed to open or convert those files with any free software.
(Recent Inkscape claims to open these files but I don't get valuable content.)

Besides the free software thing: CorelDraw is still available but has lost its major market share. So it's even hard to find someone who has CorelDraw installed.

It seems that upstream wants the package to be called unar (since it is just command line utilities without GUI). They have asked Debian maintainers to change name from theunarchiver to unar.

7z's rar unpacking code is from the original unrar and non-free. 7z itself is GPL, but only if you remove the unrar code. Thus, for example, the Gentoo package ships without rar unpacking capability.

Let's make a stronger case for 7-zip! I promote going to torrent-sites (which I guess is the strongest promoter of tar) and request/promote the use of a better compression algorithm, i.e. 7-zip.

The client is a also a lot better than Rar, and can unpack all different formats, including rar.

It shall either directly depend on dev-libs/icu or >=gnustep-base-1.22.0 which enforces ICU useflag, when compiled against gnustep-base-1.20.1 which is at the moment stable it breaks on missing unicode/ucnv.h
If you need help getting parts of the unarchiver to work, I've been working on its tar unpacker, so I usually have linux (64bit) executables sitting around. Great to hear it is getting adopted into use by people.

I'm not sure how new the newest release is, but if it's a while old, the current version from mercurial should contain vastly improved commandline tools (such as lsar, which now supports long listings that actually have some useful information).

Update on that 3-monito setup thing.

I have finally got it to work. First with closed-source drivers and then, after system crashed and I decided to use open source drivers when seeking the path out of hell, I have managed to get it to work even with open source driver.

It just has to be given right parameters.

Which are not that easy to find. Just a moment before Google decided to give me the f**k-off, I have stumbled on the link where it was explained.

Finally. After more than a !?&!$%# two weeks. :o/

But this is kind of normal for Linux, right ?
